GM’s vision for the future of transportation is zero crashes, zero emissions and zero congestion. Our strategy is to lead the automotive industry by continuing to build world-class internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles while investing in a new generation of electric vehicles (EV) that are gaining acceptance from consumers.

To meet this bold vision, we need to have the most highly trained, skilled and committed employees in the automotive industry. And we need to create opportunities for everyone across our workforce to believe in — and want to contribute to — our success.

The size of our workforce — more than 90,000 employees across the United States, of which 51,000 are part of manufacturing teams — means there are diverse reasons why people are attracted to work at GM. In some cases, a father, grandfather, or other family member has worked at GM. So GM is part of their own family. For others, they’ve joined GM and experienced first-hand the opportunity to learn, perform well and be rewarded with world class wages, benefits and conditions. Many take advantage of early career and mentorship programs to find the role where they can have the greatest impact. They make GM their career. For others, joining the GM team is an opportunity to gain valuable work experience and earn an income before moving on to other passions in life.

We want all our employees to have the tools, training and resources to do their best work safely while on the factory floor. But we also care about their personal lives and their ability to care for themselves and their families. To this end, we offer numerous benefits for our manufacturing employees, most of whom are represented by a union.

GM offers a total compensation package that includes:

  • Wages: consist of an hourly rate, overtime pay when applicable, performance bonuses, and an annual profit-sharing program.
  • Healthcare Benefits: physical and emotional care provided through a comprehensive medical, behavioral health and prescription drug coverage plan — all with extremely low employee contributions.
  • Paid Vacation and Holiday Pay: paid time off for vacation days, and paid time off for several national holidays (up to 17 paid holidays per year).
  • Retirement Program: GM has several options for ensuring hourly employees are prepared for retirement.
    • Traditional employees are enrolled in the defined benefit pension plan, which closed to new entrants effective October 16, 2007. Retirees also have access to a Voluntary Employee Beneficiary Association (VEBA) Trust that has been set up to provide former eligible GM employees with healthcare in retirement.
    • In-Progression employees are automatically enrolled after attaining seniority in a defined contribution plan. GM contributes a retirement contribution of 6.4% into a Personal Savings Plan. Additionally, GM makes a company contribution of one dollar per hour (up to 2080 hours annually) that is attributed to offset healthcare cost in retirement.
  • Paid Family Leave: up to 12 weeks for family caregiving needs.
  • Other Benefits: company-paid, voluntary, and employee-paid sickness leave, accident and disability coverage and life insurance.
  • Vehicle Purchase Program: employees and their friends and family can save on the purchase of GM vehicles, parts, and services.

GM also offers several educational and career development opportunities:

  • Tuition Assistance Program: GM provides employees with up to $6,000 for tuition in a 12-month period. This enables people to pursue their educational goals while also earning an income.
  • Technical Learning University (TLU): GM’s TLU offers training in developing technologies, upskilling, and reskilling for our manufacturing workforce under one roof. Its mission is to improve the technical ability of our skilled trades workers and manufacturing engineers at the Global Technical Center campus in Warren, Michigan. Courses are designed so students can continue to perform their “day jobs” while participating in training sessions at TLU, where thousands of employees have taken advantage of this program to date.
  • Development Opportunities: There are many opportunities for hourly employees to grow and develop. Employees can take advantage of professional development opportunities directly at their site or GM’s Employee Placement System (EPS) to help them explore job transfer opportunities across the U.S.

Contributing to an inclusive culture

GM aspires to be the most inclusive company in the world by building a culture and team that looks like the people we serve. We believe everyone deserves to work in an environment where they can be proud of who they are and true to their identities.

GM has several Employee Resource Groups (ERGs), which are voluntary, employee-led groups that help us foster a diverse, inclusive workplace. ERGs provide a forum for interested employees to share common work and life experiences, engage in professional development, and more.

GM aspires to become the most inclusive company in the world. All decisions are made on a non-discriminatory basis without regard to sex, race, color, age, disability, pregnancy or maternity, sexual orientation, gender identity, citizenship status, military status, or any other similarly protected status in accordance with federal, state, and local laws.

Employees often lead our culture of giving. We participate with countless organizations in programs in our plant cities like Toys for Tots, UNCF, Breast Cancer Awareness and Make-a-Wish to name a few. GM’s Dollars for Doers program provides grants to non-profit organizations where employees volunteer regularly. Employees can also participate in the company’s disaster relief efforts.

GM values the leadership and contribution that America’s veterans have made to their country, and we work to match veterans and their spouses with career opportunities suited to their skills and experience. The company also supports several national veterans’ support organizations.
